Chima was born and raised in Tokyo. From the age of five, she started studying Japanese calligraphy under the calligrapher Shuen Sanada. She also pursued other artistic interests, such as painting and acting, to expand her horizons. In 2012 she started work as an independent abstract calligrapher, a profession which is known as "BOKUSHOUKA" in Japan. Not only has she been holding solo exhibitions worldwide, but she has also collaborated with Hiroe Katou, a flower artist, creating a team called SumiHana. By collaborating with musicians and other kinds of artists, she strives to push the boundaries of calligraphy from its traditional origins into a new form of contemporary modern calligraphy. She also holds a calligraphy workshop called Sumi-no-wa, which is about thinking out of the box and going against the grain of traditional calligraphy. Despite her progressive attitude towards the craft, she is also very involved in spreading the practice of traditional Japanese crafts to prevent them from dying out. To do so, she has worked together with long-standing traditional Japanese sandal makers "Iwasa" and old Japanese pottery fabricators who produce "Hasami" and "Imari" -style pottery to create products adorned with her calligraphy. This, she hopes, will help spread the appeal of these crafts once more.
